Magisterial District Judge

Definition:

▪ First level of the PA Unified Judicial System
▪ Civil cases: jurisdiction over issues such as contracts, trespass, landlord/tenant and other civil matters up to $12,000
▪ Criminal cases: issue warrants and summonses, accept pleas and impose sentence for some misdemeanor crimes and summary charges, preside over preliminary hearings on felonies
▪ Rulings may be appealed to the county court of common pleas

Qualifications:

▪ 21 years or older
▪ Resident of the judicial district for one year prior to the election
▪ Certified by the PA Minor Judiciary Education Board or an attorney admitted to the PA Bar.

Compensation and Employment:

▪ Compensation set by the Pennsylvania legislature
