Second Class Township Supervisor

Typical Areas of Governance:

Some of these may not apply, for instance the township may not have a police department or a public park.

▪ Stormwater Management
▪ Planning and Zoning
▪ Police
▪ Parks and Recreation
▪ Building Permits
▪ Emergency Management
▪ Water and Sewer

Typical Duties:

▪ Attend township meetings a least monthly
▪ Serve on township committees
▪ Enact local laws (ordinances)
▪ Adopt annual budget
▪ Levy taxes
▪ Make appointments to boards and commissions

Length of Term:

▪ 6 Years
▪ Supervisors elected on staggering terms (at least one supervisor elected every two years)
▪ Short term: If a seat becomes vacant during the term, the supervisors appoint a citizen to fill the unexpired term. If there are at least two years remaining in the unexpired term, the seat is put on the ballot at the next municipal election the remainder of the term.

How Elected:

▪ At large: by all the registered voters in the borough

Size of Council:

▪ 3 or 5 supervisors


▪ Elected from all supervisors, by the supervisors
▪ Chair
▪ Vice chair
▪ Secretary and treasurer are appointed positions and may be held by supervisors or township employees
