JONES APPEARS TO WIN NOMINATION

THE COUNTING OF WRITE-IN BALLOTS IN THE PENNSYLVANIA 51ST LEGISLATIVE DISTRCT PRIMARY ELECTION HAS BEEN COMPLETED IN FAYETTE COUNTY, AND KEVIN JONES APPEARS TO BE THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE IN NOVEMBER, CAPTURING A TOTAL OF 728 VOTES IN FAYETTE COUNTY.

INCUMBENT REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE MATT DOWLING, WHO STAGED A WRITE-IN CAMPAIGN TO BE THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE AS WELL, RECEIVED A TOTAL OF 549 VOTES.

THERE WERE 150 WRITE IN VOTES THAT HAVE NOT BEEN COUNTED IN SOMERSET COUNTY, THOSE NUMBERS SHOULD BE AVAILABLE BY MONDAY, JUNE 15TH, BUT EVEN IF DOWLING RECEIVED ALL 150 VOTES HE WOULD STILL BE TRAILING THE VOTE TOTAL THAT JONES ACCUMULATED IN FAYETTE COUNTY.

THE GENERAL ELECTION IS NOVEMBER 3.

Representative in the General Assembly – 51st Legislative District

For the 51st Legislative District, Matthew David Dowling secured the Republican Nod while it is uncertain it is likely that a write in campaign of Kevin D. Jones will put him on the Democratic side of the ticket in the fall.

Local races include one with incumbent facing no opposition, another with primary challenge

Pennsylvania’s 2020 primary election is less than 10 weeks away, and according to information on the Department of State’s database, all U.S. Congress and state legislative races in Fayette and Greene counties and the mid-Mon Valley portions of Washington and Westmoreland counties have both Democratic and Republican candidates.

Except one.

In the 51st Legislative District, comprised of parts of Fayette and Somerset counties, state Rep. Matt Dowling, R-Uniontown, faces no opposition in his quest for a third term, having defeated former state Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-South Union Township, in 2016 and 2018.

State Rep. Ryan Warner, R-Perryopolis, will seek a fourth term in the 52nd Legislative District, which consists of parts of Fayette and Westmoreland counties. Harry Young Cochran of Connellsville, a Democrat, filed paperwork to challenge him in the fall.

In the 49th Legislative District, incumbent state Rep. Bud Cook, R-West Pike Run Township, is seeking a third term but will face a primary challenge from fellow Republican Tony Bottino Jr. of Carroll Township. Democrat Randy Barli of Coal Center also filed.

State Rep. Pam Snyder, a Democrat from Morgan Township, is seeking a fifth term in the 50th Legislative District and appears poised to face Republican Larry W. Yost II of Dunkard Township in the fall. That district encompasses small parts of Fayette and Washington counties in addition to all of Greene County.

In the 14th Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Peters Township, will have an autumn opponent in Democrat William A. Marx of Delmont. The district includes all of Fayette, Greene and Washington counties, plus much of Westmoreland County.

The primary is April 28.

Candidates for Congress and the Pennsylvania Legislature run for two-year terms.

Also on the ballot along with president and statewide row office are many candidates vying to be chosen as delegates or alternates to Democratic and Republican Party presidential nominating conventions.

State Rep. Matt Dowling to seek reelection in 2020

State Rep. Matthew Dowling
Rep. Matt Dowling

With one more year to go on his current term in the state House of Representatives, Rep. Matt Dowling, R-Uniontown, announced that he is running for reelection in the 51st District.

While he is proud of everything he’s accomplished over the last three years, Dowling said he has more work to do.

One of those issues is a legislation package he worked on to address the state’s opioid epidemic. The legislation was the result of a bipartisan effort that takes a comprehensive approach, focusing on treatment for those trapped in addiction, tougher penalties for drug dealers, and public education on the factors that drive addiction to stop it before it starts, he said.

“I am proud that – working in a bipartisan manner – we have moved forward a commonsense package of legislation to address the opioid epidemic,” said Dowling.

The penalties for recovering opioid addicts in the package is less punitive and more focused on healing and assisting those afflicted with addiction more opportunities for a better life after recovery.

“I am a father of a 5-year-old and a 7-year-old. I’m hoping that by the time they get to middle school and high school, when they are faced with questions … that this epidemic has subsided,” said Dowling. “And not just for my kids, for my neighbors’ kids and for all the kids in the communities I serve.”

Dowling said there is no shortage of issues that face the communities his district serves in Fayette and Somerset counties.

He said he’s focused on supporting policies that spark economic and job growth, ensure quality education for children, protect the constitutional rights of his constituents, and making sure those he represents get back their fair share of funding for vital projects in their communities.

“I look at my record and see what we’ve been able to accomplish in the last three years … the votes I’ve taken for the people I represent,” said Dowling. “I want to continue to work toward a more successful Fayette County and the communities I hope to help, the people I represent.”

Dowling was raised and educated in the heart of his district. He was first elected in 2016, and secured reelection in 2018. In addition to being a small business owner Dowling is an active community volunteer and served as Rotary District Governor for the seven-county region. Dowling and his wife, Rebecca live in Uniontown with their two young sons, W. Pierce and Preston.

Mahoney loses bid for former seat in 51st District

In a rematch to see who would represent the 51st Legislative District, state Rep. Matthew Dowling secured a second term as state representative.

Receiving 55.91 percent of the vote, the Uniontown Republican won his rematch with former state Rep. Tim Mahoney Tuesday. Mahoney, a Democrat, served five terms in office before losing to Dowling in 2016.

Dowling received 72.44 percent of the vote in Somerset County. He received 51.38 percent in Fayette County.

During the campaign, Dowling said he wanted to find federal funds to finish four-lane Route 219 to Maryland. Dowling also said he wanted to address how opioid and narcotic prescriptions are transmitted from doctor’s offices to local pharmacies, and put more limits on unfunded mandates in school districts.

Last week, Dowling filed a petition against Mahoney and his campaign in the Fayette County Court of Common Pleas to prevent the campaign from publishing “false and misleading” material about him. Dowling said Mahoney’s actions violated the Pennsylvania Election Code. Fayette County Judge Gerald Solomon denied the petition Monday.

Mahoney, who received 44.09 percent of the vote, said this was a nasty, dirty campaign. He said he is not planning to run again in two years. Mahoney won 27.46 percent of the vote in Somerset County.

The 51st District covers parts of Fayette and Somerset counties.

51st Legislative District

As this was in the 50th last election, it is kind of like that in the 51st this election, however the challenger of the 2016 election is now the incumbent now and the challenger now was a  10-year assemblyman. Another face off between these two candidates, as with the neighboring 50th District to the West will take place this fall with Tim Mahoney securing the Democratic Nod with 2,811 votes and Matthew Dowling again securing the Republican nod with 2,558 votes.
